Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactococcus rhamnosus is a probiotic bacterium that has been researched for its potential effects on stress and mood. The scientific interest stems from the concept of the "gut-brain axis," a bidirectional communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Some animal studies have shown that certain strains of L. rhamnosus can modulate neurotransmitter receptors and reduce stress-related behaviors. For example, a widely cited 2011 study in mice found that supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus (note: often confused with Lactococcus, but the majority of probiotic research is on Lactobacillus species) altered GABA receptor expression in the brain and reduced stress-induced corticosterone levels and anxiety- and depression-related behavior (Bravo et al., 2011). Human studies are limited and results are mixed, with most research focusing on Lactobacillus rather than Lactococcus species, though some multi-strain probiotic formulations containing L. rhamnosus have shown modest benefits for stress reduction in small clinical trials. Overall, while preliminary evidence suggests possible effects of L. rhamnosus on stress, the evidence base is still limited, strain-specific, and not conclusive. More clinical research, especially using well-characterized strains of Lactococcus rhamnosus in humans, is needed to firmly establish its efficacy for stress management.
