Evidence supporting the use of: Phosphatidylserine complex
For the health condition: Stress
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid component found in cell membranes, particularly in the brain. Its use for stress reduction is primarily supported by a modest body of scientific evidence. Several clinical studies have investigated phosphatidylserine supplementation in the context of stress, particularly stress induced by exercise or mental tasks. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (2004) found that supplementation with phosphatidylserine (at 600 mg/day for 10 days) blunted the increase in cortisol, a principal stress hormone, in response to exercise-induced stress in healthy males. Other studies, such as one in Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2008), have also shown that phosphatidylserine supplementation may help reduce perceived stress and improve mood in response to acute stressors. The proposed mechanism is related to its impact on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, moderating the release of cortisol. However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with relatively small sample sizes and variations in study design. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews note that while there is some support for phosphatidylserine’s stress-moderating effects, more large-scale, well-controlled trials are needed to definitively establish efficacy. Thus, while there is scientific validation for its use in stress management, the strength of the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5).
