Polygonatum kingianum, commonly known as King Solomon's Seal, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Traditionally, it is used as a tonic herb to nourish the yin, moisten dryness, replenish vital energy, and support general well-being. In TCM theory, stress and related symptoms are often associated with imbalances in yin and qi, and herbs like Polygonatum kingianum are believed to help restore balance and alleviate symptoms of stress, fatigue, and weakness. However, these uses are based on traditional medical systems and concepts rather than modern biomedical frameworks.
Scientific research on Polygonatum kingianum specifically for the management or treatment of stress is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that extracts of Polygonatum species may have adaptogenic, anti-fatigue, or neuroprotective effects in animal models, which could theoretically relate to stress reduction, but direct evidence in humans is lacking. To date, no high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy for stress management. Therefore, while its use for stress is rooted in tradition and supported by TCM theory, there is only weak scientific evidence to validate these claims.
