Evidence supporting the use of: Saffron
For the health condition: Stress
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Saffron (Crocus sativus) has a long history of traditional use for mood-related conditions in various cultures, notably in Persian and Ayurvedic medicine. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to explore saffron's potential for supporting mental health, including stress reduction. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have demonstrated that saffron supplementation (typically 30 mg/day) may significantly reduce symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety, both of which are closely linked to stress. The proposed mechanisms include saffron’s modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, as well as its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help mitigate the physiological impacts of stress.
While most studies focus specifically on depression and anxiety, rather than stress per se, the overlap between these conditions suggests that saffron may have a beneficial effect on stress-related symptoms. A 2018 systematic review in Journal of Integrative Medicine concluded that saffron exhibits significant anxiolytic and antidepressant properties in adults. However, direct research on saffron for “stress” as a standalone outcome is limited, and more targeted studies are needed.
In summary, the use of saffron for stress is supported by moderate scientific evidence, primarily extrapolated from studies on depression and anxiety. It appears generally safe when used in recommended doses, but individuals should consult healthcare professionals before use, especially if taking other medications.
