Sulforaphane, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, has been investigated for its potential effects on stress, particularly due to its influence on oxidative stress and inflammation. Preclinical and a few early clinical studies suggest that sulforaphane may modulate cellular stress responses and support brain health by activating the Nrf2 pathway, which is involved in the body’s antioxidant defense system. Some rodent studies have indicated that sulforaphane administration can reduce anxiety-like and depressive behaviors, possibly through modulation of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress markers.
Human evidence is still limited. A small number of pilot studies have observed improvements in mood or reductions in perceived stress following supplementation, but these findings are preliminary and not yet robust. No large-scale clinical trials have conclusively established sulforaphane as an effective intervention for stress in humans. Most studies focus on biochemical markers or animal models rather than direct measures of psychological stress in people.
In summary, while there is a plausible biological rationale and some early scientific evidence for sulforaphane's role in supporting stress resilience, the strength of the evidence is currently low, and further research in humans is required.
