Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in defending the body against oxidative stress by catalyzing the conversion of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Oxidative stress has been linked to psychological and physiological stress responses, suggesting a potential role for antioxidants like SOD in mitigating stress-related damage. Some scientific studies, including small clinical trials and preclinical models, have investigated the effects of orally administered SOD or SOD-rich extracts (often from melon) on stress markers. These studies have sometimes reported reductions in perceived stress, improvements in antioxidant status, and decreases in biomarkers such as cortisol. For example, a few randomized, placebo-controlled trials have found that SOD supplementation can reduce psychological stress scores and fatigue in healthy adults over several weeks. However, the number of high-quality studies remains limited, and there is ongoing debate regarding the bioavailability of orally ingested SOD, as it is a protein that can be degraded in the digestive tract. In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of SOD for stress, the strength and consistency of this evidence are still relatively modest, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5. More robust clinical research is required to conclusively establish its efficacy and optimal use in stress management.
