Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fungi, particularly medicinal mushrooms such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), and Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s Mane), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, for supporting overall health. In recent decades, scientific research has begun to validate some of these traditional claims, especially regarding their potential to support the structural system—bones, joints, tendons, and connective tissues.

Several studies have demonstrated that certain fungal species can have positive effects on bone health. For instance, polysaccharides and other bioactive compounds found in mushrooms may promote osteoblast differentiation and function, contributing to bone formation and maintenance. Beta-glucans, commonly present in the cell walls of mushrooms, have shown anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which may support joint health and reduce symptoms of conditions like osteoarthritis. Additionally, mushrooms are a natural source of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) when exposed to sunlight, which can help maintain healthy bone mineralization.

However, most clinical evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro research, with relatively few large-scale human trials. The overall rating of 3 reflects moderate scientific support, largely based on preliminary data and traditional use, but with a need for more robust human studies to confirm efficacy for structural system support.
