Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Marine oil, commonly referring to fish oil or other oils derived from marine sources, is widely used to support the structural system, particularly bone and joint health. There is considerable scientific evidence supporting this use. Marine oils are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which have anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies have found that omega-3 supplementation can help reduce symptoms in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition affecting the joints, and may also slow the progression of joint degradation in osteoarthritis. Additionally, some research suggests that marine oil supplementation can positively influence bone health by modulating bone turnover and improving bone mineral density, particularly in populations at risk of osteoporosis, such as postmenopausal women. However, while the evidence is strong for supporting joint health and inflammation, the direct effects on bone density are still being explored, and not all studies have found significant benefits. Overall, the use of marine oil to support elements of the structural system—mainly joints and possibly bones—is justified by a substantial body of scientific research, earning it a high evidence rating.
