Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sulphur is an essential mineral in the human body, primarily incorporated as a component of amino acids (such as methionine and cysteine), vitamins (thiamine and biotin), and other vital molecules. The structural system, which includes bones, cartilage, tendons, and connective tissues, relies on sulphur-containing compounds for the synthesis and maintenance of structural proteins like collagen and keratin. Collagen, for example, contains sulphur-rich amino acids that are critical for cross-linking and stability of connective tissue. Scientific studies support the role of sulphur, particularly in the form of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and glucosamine sulfate, in supporting joint health and reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis, though the magnitude of benefit is moderate and evidence is mixed. Dietary sulphur is obtained from protein-rich foods and is required for normal tissue structure and function. While severe sulphur deficiency is rare due to its abundance in the diet, research indicates its importance in maintaining the integrity of the structural system. Therefore, the use of sulphur to support the structural system is scientifically validated, though mostly as a necessary nutrient rather than as a therapeutic supplement for structural health conditions.
