Evidence supporting the use of: Antler horn
For the health condition: Surgery (healing from)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler horn, also known as deer antler velvet, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and various East Asian healing systems. Traditionally, it is believed to possess properties that enhance vitality, promote blood circulation, and support tissue regeneration. For this reason, antler horn is sometimes prescribed after surgery or injury to aid recovery and healing. The rationale is rooted in ancient texts and TCM theory, which attribute "yang" strengthening and restorative qualities to antler velvet. However, scientific evidence for its effectiveness in aiding post-surgical healing is very limited. Few clinical studies have specifically investigated its impact on surgical recovery, and those that exist tend to be small, poorly controlled, or focus on general health rather than recovery outcomes. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds in antler velvet may influence cell growth or immune response, but this does not directly translate to proven benefits in surgical healing for humans. Overall, while use in this context is supported by tradition, robust clinical evidence is lacking.
