Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC) is a compound derived from whole bone and is rich in calcium, phosphorus, and other bone matrix proteins. Its primary proposed benefit is to support bone health and healing, particularly in situations involving bone loss or recovery from bone-related injuries, such as after surgery. Some scientific studies suggest that MCHC supplementation may enhance bone regeneration and healing due to its bioavailable minerals and bone growth factors. Animal studies and some small human clinical trials have demonstrated improved bone mineral density and accelerated fracture healing with MCHC supplementation compared to calcium alone. For example, a few randomized controlled trials in postmenopausal women and patients with bone fractures have shown modest improvements in bone healing markers and recovery rates with MCHC. However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Most studies are small, short-term, and lack robust controls. There is a paucity of large-scale, high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating MCHC for surgical healing in humans. Thus, while the rationale for its use is grounded in its composition and some preliminary findings, the current scientific support is not strong.
