Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2
Serralysin (also known as serrapeptase) is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. It has been used as a supplement for various indications, including supporting healing after surgery. Scientific evidence supporting its use in post-surgical healing is limited but does exist, primarily from small clinical trials and studies, particularly in Japan and parts of Europe.
Some studies suggest that serralysin can reduce inflammation, edema (swelling), and pain after surgical procedures, such as dental surgery (e.g., extraction of third molars), by breaking down inflammatory mediators and facilitating the drainage of fluid from tissue. In a few randomized controlled trials, patients who received serralysin after surgery reported less swelling and pain compared to placebo groups. The enzyme’s proposed mechanism involves the degradation of bradykinin, histamine, and serotonin, thereby reducing inflammation and improving microcirculation at the wound site.
However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate to low due to small sample sizes, short duration, and methodological limitations in the existing studies. There is a lack of large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials to firmly establish efficacy and safety in this context. While serralysin has a long history of use in some countries for this purpose, regulatory agencies such as the FDA have not approved it for post-surgical healing, and mainstream medical guidelines do not recommend its use.
In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting serralysin for healing after surgery, it is not robust, and more research is needed.
