Somatropin, a recombinant form of human growth hormone (GH), has some scientific support for its use in enhancing recovery and healing following surgery, particularly in patients with severe catabolic states or those with growth hormone deficiency. Growth hormone is known to promote protein synthesis, increase collagen deposition, and enhance muscle and tissue repair, all of which are important processes for postoperative healing. Clinical studies have shown that administration of somatropin can accelerate wound healing, particularly in burns and major trauma, by reducing nitrogen loss and improving lean body mass retention. In surgical patients, especially those who are critically ill or have large wounds, somatropin may reduce the duration of recovery and hospital stay.

However, the evidence is mixed and not universally positive. Some studies have raised concerns about increased risk of complications, such as hyperglycemia and, in critically ill adults, increased mortality rates. As a result, the use of somatropin in surgical recovery is generally reserved for specific patient groups—such as those with proven GH deficiency or severe catabolism—rather than the general postoperative population. Large, well-controlled trials in diverse surgical populations are lacking, so while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting clinical evidence, routine use is not widely recommended. Clinical guidelines advise careful patient selection and close monitoring if somatropin is used for surgical healing.
