Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Adrenal gland extracts, often referred to as "adrenals" in supplements, have a long history of use in traditional naturopathic and alternative medicine. Historically, these extracts—derived from animal adrenal glands—were used with the belief that they could support adrenal function and, by extension, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which is partly regulated by hormones produced in the adrenal medulla (specifically adrenaline and noradrenaline). The rationale was that consuming glandular tissues would "nourish" the corresponding human organ or system, a concept known as "organotherapy." However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. Most modern research on adrenal support focuses on pharmaceuticals or specific compounds, not on whole-gland extracts. There is no strong clinical evidence that oral adrenal extracts improve SNS function or treat adrenal fatigue. Some older studies and anecdotal reports suggest possible benefits, but these are often not well-controlled or lack rigorous methodology. Additionally, concerns exist regarding product safety and consistency, as well as the potential for contamination or immune reactions. In summary, the use of adrenal extracts to support the sympathetic nervous system is rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. While the historical rationale is clear, current scientific evidence does not substantiate their efficacy for this purpose.
