Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex and plays a central role in the body's response to stress, which is mediated by the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). When the SNS is activated—such as in a "fight or flight" response—cortisol is released as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This hormone increases glucose availability, modulates immune responses, and helps maintain homeostasis during stressful situations. There is substantial scientific validation for cortisol's role in supporting and modulating the activity of the SNS, as shown in numerous studies on stress physiology. Cortisol does not directly stimulate the SNS, but it works downstream to sustain energy availability, modulate cardiovascular function, and manage inflammation during prolonged stress. Excess or deficient cortisol levels are linked to disorders such as Cushing's syndrome or Addison's disease, both of which can disrupt SNS-mediated processes. Thus, cortisol's use in supporting the SNS is evidence-based and well-understood within the context of endogenous hormone regulation and pharmacological interventions for adrenal insufficiency or overactivity.
