Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus senticosus), often referred to as Siberian ginseng, has been traditionally used in Russian and Chinese medicine as an adaptogen—a substance believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors. Its primary traditional use involves supporting overall vitality and resilience, which includes modulating the body's stress response, a function largely governed by the sympathetic nervous system. Historical records from Russia, especially during the mid-20th century, document its use in enhancing the performance and stamina of athletes, soldiers, and cosmonauts, with the intent of improving the body's ability to adapt to stress. Scientific studies on Eleuthero have shown some evidence of its ability to influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and modulate stress hormones like cortisol, which are closely linked to sympathetic nervous system function. However, much of the clinical data is preliminary, with small sample sizes and variable study quality. Overall, while Eleuthero root is widely used in traditional medicine for this purpose, and there is some scientific rationale, the evidence base is not robust enough to warrant a higher rating.
