Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily for its calming effects on the mind and body. Traditionally, it is used as a nervine tonic and is believed to balance the 'Vata' and 'Pitta' doshas, which are associated with nervous system function and stress responses in Ayurveda. While the sympathetic nervous system as a concept does not exist in ancient Ayurvedic texts, many of the conditions Jatamansi is used for—such as anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia—are linked to sympathetic overactivity in modern physiology.

Scientific studies on Jatamansi are limited but suggest possible sedative, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective effects in animal models; however, direct evidence supporting its specific action on the sympathetic nervous system in humans is lacking. Most current uses are thus justified by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. Overall, Jatamansi’s use for supporting the sympathetic nervous system is primarily rooted in tradition, with some preliminary scientific rationale but insufficient clinical evidence to strongly support its efficacy for this specific purpose.
