Oriental Ginseng, more specifically Panax ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as an adaptogen—an agent believed to help the body resist stressors, including those affecting the nervous system. From a scientific perspective, there is moderate evidence indicating that ginsenosides (the active compounds in Panax ginseng) can influence the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Several animal and human studies suggest that ginseng may enhance alertness, improve cognitive performance, and modulate the body's response to stress, likely via effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neurotransmitter systems associated with the SNS.

For example, ginseng has been shown to increase resistance to fatigue and improve mood in some clinical trials, effects that are believed to be mediated by enhanced SNS activity and increased secretion of catecholamines (such as norepinephrine). Additionally, some studies demonstrate that ginseng can influence heart rate and blood pressure, markers of SNS activation. However, results are mixed and often limited by small sample sizes, differences in ginseng preparations, and variable study quality. Large, well-controlled trials are still needed.

In summary, while Panax ginseng is traditionally used for its adaptogenic properties, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting its ability to modulate the sympathetic nervous system, though the strength and consistency of this evidence remain limited.
