Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is rich in caffeine, which has well-documented physiological effects on the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant by antagonizing adenosine receptors, leading to increased release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine. This results in heightened alertness, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure—classic markers of sympathetic nervous system activation. Clinical studies have consistently shown that caffeine consumption from coffee, including Robusta (which contains higher caffeine levels than Arabica), acutely stimulates SNS activity, as demonstrated by increased plasma catecholamines and sympathetic nerve traffic. These effects are the basis for its use in counteracting fatigue and enhancing cognitive and physical performance. While most studies do not differentiate between coffee species, the higher caffeine content in Robusta implies a more pronounced effect. However, chronic consumption can lead to tolerance, and individual responses can vary. There is no traditional use specifically ascribed to “Robusta coffee” for this purpose, but the scientific mechanism and experimental data justify its use in supporting the SNS. It should be noted that excessive or inappropriate use may cause adverse effects related to overstimulation of the sympathetic system.
