Rosavins are a group of active compounds found in Rhodiola rosea, a traditional adaptogenic herb. There is growing scientific interest in Rhodiola's effects on the stress response, which is mediated largely by the sympathetic nervous system. Several preclinical and clinical studies suggest that Rhodiola extracts standardized to rosavins may help modulate physiological responses to acute stressors. For example, randomized controlled trials in humans have shown that Rhodiola can reduce fatigue and improve attention and cognitive function during periods of stress, effects believed to be related to modulation of catecholamine levels and reduced over-activation of the sympathetic-adrenal system. Mechanistically, rosavins are proposed to influence key mediators such as cortisol and norepinephrine, thereby supporting adaptation to stress and helping maintain sympathetic nervous system balance. However, while these findings are encouraging, most studies use whole plant extracts containing both rosavins and salidroside, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to rosavins. The evidence base includes both traditional use (for fatigue and stress resilience) and modern studies, but more high-quality, rosavin-specific research is needed to fully confirm efficacy. Thus, while not definitive, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of rosavins to support the sympathetic nervous system.
