Eugenol is a natural compound most commonly derived from clove oil. Its use in supporting the teeth, particularly in dentistry, is well-established and supported by scientific evidence. Eugenol exhibits analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties, making it valuable for oral health applications. In dental practice, eugenol is frequently used as a component of temporary fillings and cements, such as zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), and for the temporary relief of toothache, particularly in cases of dental caries or pulpitis.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that eugenol can effectively reduce dental pain by acting as a local anesthetic and by suppressing nerve conduction. It also possesses antimicrobial activity against a range of oral pathogens, contributing to infection control in the oral cavity. Its anti-inflammatory effects further help in reducing swelling and discomfort associated with dental issues.

However, while eugenol is effective for temporary relief and as a component in dental materials, it is not a long-term cure for underlying dental problems. Prolonged or excessive exposure can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. The evidence supporting its use is robust for short-term symptomatic management, but it does not substitute for definitive dental care. Thus, its role is primarily adjunctive and palliative, rather than curative.
