Rating (out of 5): 5

Fluorine, in the form of fluoride, has strong scientific validation for its use in supporting the teeth (oral) body system. Extensive research over decades has demonstrated that fluoride helps prevent dental caries (tooth decay) by enhancing the remineralization of enamel and inhibiting the demineralization process caused by acids from bacterial metabolism. Community water fluoridation, which began in the 1940s, is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses have shown that fluoride use—whether via water fluoridation, toothpaste, or professional dental treatments—significantly reduces the incidence of cavities in both children and adults. The mechanism involves the incorporation of fluoride ions into the hydroxyapatite mineral matrix of teeth, forming fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acidic dissolution. The safety and efficacy of fluoride at recommended levels are well established, with regulatory agencies worldwide supporting its use for dental health. Excessive fluoride exposure, however, can lead to dental fluorosis, but this is rare in areas where fluoride levels are monitored. Overall, fluoride's role in oral health is one of the most robustly supported interventions in preventive dentistry.
