Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine for supporting dental and oral health. In India and other parts of South Asia, people have chewed neem twigs as a natural toothbrush for centuries, believing it helps clean teeth and maintain gum health. Traditional texts describe neem as having antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to be beneficial in preventing dental plaque formation, reducing gum inflammation, and managing oral infections such as gingivitis.

Modern scientific research provides some support for these traditional uses. Studies have shown neem extracts possess antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens, including Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are associated with dental caries and periodontal disease. Small clinical trials and in vitro studies indicate neem-based mouthwashes and toothpastes may reduce plaque, improve gum health, and lower microbial load in the mouth. However, the quality of evidence is generally low to moderate, and large, well-controlled human studies are limited.

Overall, while neem’s use for dental support is primarily rooted in tradition, preliminary scientific research aligns with some of these traditional claims, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
