Pearl, in the context of traditional Chinese medicine and some other Asian healing systems, has been used historically to support dental health. The use of powdered pearl (Zhen Zhu) in oral care dates back centuries, with claims that it strengthens teeth, promotes gum health, and helps with oral ulcers. The rationale for its use is largely based on its mineral content, particularly calcium carbonate, which is a major component of both pearls and human teeth. In traditional formulations, pearl powder has been incorporated into pastes and powders for cleaning and fortifying teeth.

However, while the traditional use is well-documented, the scientific evidence supporting pearl powder’s effectiveness for dental health is limited. There are few clinical studies evaluating its direct effects on teeth, remineralization, or oral health outcomes. Some in-vitro studies suggest that the calcium in pearl may be bioavailable, but these do not equate to robust clinical evidence. Modern toothpaste often uses refined calcium carbonate for its mild abrasiveness and remineralizing properties, but this is not specific to pearls and does not validate pearl powder as uniquely beneficial. Thus, its use for dental health is justified primarily by tradition, with only modest plausibility based on its mineral composition.
