Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sapindus mukorossi, commonly known as soapnut or reetha, has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and folk medicine, particularly in India. It is often used for oral hygiene purposes, including as a natural tooth cleanser and for treating dental issues such as cavities and gum disease. Traditional preparations involve powdering the dried fruit and using it as a tooth powder or mixing it with other herbs to clean teeth and maintain oral health. The use is based on its saponin content, which produces a mild foaming action thought to aid in cleaning teeth and gums.

However, scientific validation for these traditional claims is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that Sapindus mukorossi extracts may have antibacterial properties, including activity against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans, which is associated with dental caries. Despite these preliminary findings, robust clinical trials in humans evaluating its efficacy and safety for dental health are lacking. As such, its use to support the teeth is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence. The traditional rating (2/5) reflects widespread historical use but limited empirical support.
