Streptococcus salivarius is a common oral probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting oral and dental health, which includes the teeth and gums. The scientific rationale for its use is based on its ability to colonize the oral cavity and outcompete pathogenic bacteria that are implicated in dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal diseases. Several strains of S. salivarius, such as K12 and M18, have been shown in clinical studies to reduce levels of Streptococcus mutans and other harmful bacteria in the mouth. These strains can produce bacteriocins (antimicrobial peptides) that inhibit the growth of cariogenic and periodontopathogenic bacteria, thus potentially reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Randomized clinical trials and in vitro studies have reported that supplementation with S. salivarius can lead to improvements in markers of oral health, such as reduced plaque formation, decreased halitosis, and lower incidence of streptococcal infections in the throat and oral cavity. However, while evidence is promising, it is not yet robust enough to warrant the highest strength rating. More large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to fully establish the extent of its benefits for dental health. Nevertheless, current evidence does provide a scientific basis for the use of S. salivarius to support the teeth and oral microbiome.
