Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Thymol is a natural monoterpene phenol derived from thyme oil and is widely recognized for its antimicrobial properties. Its use in supporting the teeth (oral health) has scientific backing, primarily due to its effectiveness against oral pathogens. Thymol is a key active ingredient in many commercially available mouthwashes, including Listerine, where it plays a role in reducing dental plaque and gingivitis. Multiple in vitro studies have demonstrated that thymol exhibits significant antibacterial activity against bacteria implicated in dental caries and periodontal disease, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Clinical trials on essential oil mouthwashes containing thymol have shown reductions in plaque and improvements in gingival health compared to placebo or mechanical cleaning alone. The mechanism is believed to involve disruption of bacterial cell membranes and inhibition of biofilm formation. However, while the evidence supports thymol's role as an adjunct to oral hygiene, it should not be considered a substitute for brushing and flossing. The overall body of evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), as most studies assess thymol in combination with other compounds, and there is limited data on thymol as a standalone agent. Nonetheless, its inclusion in oral care products is justified by both laboratory and clinical research.
