Evidence supporting the use of: Bulbine natalensis
For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bulbine natalensis is a succulent plant native to South Africa and has been traditionally used in folk medicine, but more recently, it has attracted scientific interest for its potential effects on the male reproductive system, particularly the testes. Several animal studies, primarily in rodents, have explored its effects on testosterone levels and spermatogenesis. For example, research published in the journal Anabolic Steroid and Endocrine Research (2011) found that extracts of Bulbine natalensis increased serum testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels in male rats, and also increased testicular and prostate weights. Another study in Andrologia (2013) suggested improved sperm count and motility after administration of Bulbine natalensis extracts. The proposed mechanism is stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, although the exact bioactive compounds responsible are not fully characterized. However, the evidence is limited by the small number of studies, lack of standardized extracts, and absence of robust human clinical trials. Some studies also noted potential toxicity at higher doses, particularly affecting the liver and kidneys. Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence supporting Bulbine natalensis for supporting the testes and male reproductive hormones, the evidence is not strong or conclusive, especially in humans. Caution is warranted until more rigorous research is available.
