Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Eurycoma longifolia, also known as Tongkat Ali, has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asia, particularly as an aphrodisiac and to enhance male fertility. In recent years, scientific interest has focused on its potential effects on the testes and male reproductive health. Several human and animal studies suggest that supplementation with Eurycoma longifolia extract may improve certain parameters of male reproductive function, including increased testosterone levels, improved sperm quality, and enhanced libido.
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in men with low testosterone have shown modest but statistically significant increases in serum testosterone following supplementation. Some studies also report improvements in sperm motility and concentration. The proposed mechanisms involve stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and reduction of sex hormone-binding globulin, leading to higher levels of free testosterone. Animal studies corroborate these findings, showing increased testicular size and enhanced spermatogenesis.
Despite promising data, studies are generally small, of short duration, and sometimes funded by supplement manufacturers, which may introduce bias. Long-term safety and efficacy are not fully established. Nonetheless, there is a moderate and growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of Eurycoma longifolia for supporting testicular function and male reproductive health, though more high-quality research is warranted to confirm these effects and determine optimal dosing.
