Evidence supporting the use of: Fish
For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fish and fish oil are scientifically recognized for their positive effects on male reproductive health, including the testes. The primary active components are omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially EPA and DHA), which are abundant in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Several clinical and observational studies suggest that dietary intake of fish and fish oil supplements can improve semen quality, sperm motility, and overall testicular function. For example, a study published in JAMA Network Open (2020) found that young men who consumed fish oil supplements had higher semen volume and total sperm count compared to non-users. Animal studies further demonstrate that omega-3 supplementation can protect testicular tissue from oxidative damage and support testosterone production. While evidence is promising, much of it is correlative or derived from animal models, and human studies often focus on overall reproductive health rather than direct testicular support. Therefore, while there is scientific validation for the use of fish in supporting testicular and male reproductive health, the strength of evidence is moderate rather than definitive, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
