For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Macaenes are compounds found in maca (Lepidium meyenii), a Peruvian plant traditionally used as a food and herbal remedy. In traditional Andean medicine, maca root has been consumed to enhance stamina, fertility, and sexual function in men, which implicitly supports the testes and male reproductive system. These uses are primarily based on centuries of indigenous knowledge rather than rigorous scientific studies.
Modern research on maca’s effect on male reproductive health is limited and of varying quality. Some animal studies and small human trials suggest that maca supplementation may improve semen quality and increase libido, but the evidence is inconsistent and often does not isolate macaenes specifically. Most studies use whole maca extracts rather than purified macaenes, making it difficult to attribute effects to these compounds alone.
There is a lack of robust, large-scale clinical trials to firmly establish the efficacy of maca or macaenes in supporting testicular health or function in humans. As such, the use of macaenes for this purpose remains largely supported by traditional use rather than strong scientific validation. Overall, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific evidence remains preliminary and inconclusive.
