Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhaponticum carthamoides, commonly known as maral root or leuzea, has a long history of use in traditional Russian and Eastern European herbal medicine. Its roots have been used to enhance physical performance, stamina, and recovery, particularly among athletes. In traditional systems, it has also been used to support male reproductive health, including the testes, by purportedly increasing vitality, libido, and overall hormonal balance. These traditional uses are largely attributed to its content of ecdysteroids (notably 20-hydroxyecdysone), which are plant-derived steroid-like compounds. However, while some animal studies and in vitro research suggest potential anabolic and adaptogenic effects, direct scientific evidence supporting its specific benefits for the testes or male reproductive hormones in humans is limited and inconclusive. Most available research focuses on its general adaptogenic or ergogenic properties rather than direct testicular support. Thus, while its use for supporting the testes body system is rooted in tradition, robust clinical validation is lacking. More rigorous studies are needed to substantiate these traditional claims.
