Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Stem cells have been investigated for their potential to support the testes, primarily in the context of treating male infertility and testicular dysfunction. Preclinical studies using animal models have shown that transplantation of various types of stem cells—such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs)—can restore spermatogenesis (the process of sperm cell development) after damage from chemotherapy, radiation, or other causes. The mechanisms proposed include differentiation into germ cells, paracrine support of endogenous testicular cells, and modulation of local immune responses.

Some early-phase clinical trials and case reports have explored stem cell therapy for men with non-obstructive azoospermia (a condition where no sperm is present in semen due to testicular failure). These studies suggest potential benefits, but results are preliminary, and the procedures remain experimental. No stem cell treatment for testicular support or male infertility has received regulatory approval for clinical use due to the lack of large-scale, high-quality human studies and concerns about safety and efficacy.

In summary, there is a moderate degree of scientific evidence from animal studies and early human trials supporting the use of stem cells to potentially aid the testes, but robust clinical validation is still lacking.
