4-DHEA (4-Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a synthetic prohormone that is structurally related to DHEA, a naturally occurring hormone in the human body. 4-DHEA can be converted in the body to testosterone or other androgens through enzymatic processes. Its use as a testosterone support supplement is primarily based on its status as a prohormone, with the rationale that increasing precursor hormones may raise endogenous testosterone production. There is some scientific basis for this mechanism, as studies have shown that certain prohormones can elevate testosterone levels when metabolized. However, direct clinical evidence on 4-DHEA’s effectiveness in increasing testosterone specifically and safely in humans is extremely limited. Most of the data comes from in vitro studies, animal models, or extrapolation from related compounds such as DHEA or androstenedione. Safety, efficacy, and long-term effects have not been thoroughly studied in well-controlled human trials.
