Evidence supporting the use of: Ajuga turkestanica
For the body system: Testosterone
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ajuga turkestanica is traditionally used in Central Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Uzbekistan and surrounding regions. Its use has been primarily for supporting physical strength and recovery, which has led to its reputation as a plant that might support the testosterone body system, especially among athletes and bodybuilders. The main active compound, turkesterone (an ecdysteroid), is structurally similar to insect molting hormones and has shown some anabolic-like effects in animal studies. However, direct scientific evidence supporting its effect on testosterone levels in humans is lacking. Most available research is limited to in vitro or animal studies, and these do not convincingly demonstrate a significant impact on testosterone production or regulation. Human clinical trials are virtually nonexistent, and claims regarding testosterone support are based more on traditional use and anecdotal reports than rigorous scientific validation. Therefore, while Ajuga turkestanica is traditionally associated with vitality and strength, its specific use for supporting testosterone is only weakly justified by current evidence.
