Evidence supporting the use of: Androstenedione
For the body system: Testosterone
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Androstenedione is a steroid hormone that serves as a direct precursor in the biosynthesis of testosterone and estrone. Its use as a supplement to support the testosterone body system gained popularity in the 1990s, particularly among athletes and bodybuilders who hoped to boost testosterone levels and enhance muscle mass and performance. Scientific studies, however, have shown mixed results. Clinical research indicates that oral androstenedione supplementation can cause transient increases in serum testosterone, but these changes are often modest and inconsistent, especially in healthy young men. Some studies have found increases in estrogen levels rather than sustained elevations in testosterone, and the hormonal effects can differ significantly between individuals.
Importantly, the use of androstenedione raises safety concerns, including potential negative effects on lipid profiles, suppression of endogenous testosterone production, and an increased risk of estrogenic side effects such as gynecomastia. Due to its limited efficacy and safety concerns, androstenedione was classified as an anabolic steroid and banned by major sports organizations and the U.S. FDA. Overall, while there is a scientific basis for its potential to influence testosterone levels, the evidence supporting its use for this purpose is weak, inconsistent, and generally not recommended in clinical or sports settings.
