For the body system: Testosterone
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epimedium, commonly known as "Horny Goat Weed," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, primarily as an aphrodisiac and to support male sexual health. Its use for supporting testosterone levels and male reproductive function is based on centuries of anecdotal reports and herbal practice, rather than robust scientific validation. The primary active compound, icariin, is believed to influence hormone levels and improve erectile function, but most of the supporting evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro experiments. These studies suggest that icariin may have mild androgenic effects or may inhibit enzymes that break down testosterone, but human clinical trials are limited and results are inconclusive. Thus, while there is a strong tradition of using Epimedium to support the testosterone body system, scientific evidence is currently insufficient to fully validate these claims. Its continued popularity is driven by historical usage rather than established clinical efficacy.
