For the body system: Testosterone
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epimedium extract, commonly known as "Horny Goat Weed," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly for enhancing libido and supporting male sexual health. Its use for boosting testosterone and supporting the male reproductive system is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. The active compound, icariin, is believed to have aphrodisiac properties and is thought to modulate various hormonal pathways in animal studies. Some small-scale preclinical studies suggest that icariin may influence testosterone production by affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but these effects have not been conclusively demonstrated in well-designed human clinical trials.
Most of the evidence supporting Epimedium's role in testosterone support comes from anecdotal reports, traditional usage, and limited animal experiments. There is a lack of large, high-quality human studies confirming its efficacy for this purpose. As such, while the herb is widely used in traditional systems for this indication, current scientific evidence remains limited and does not robustly validate its testosterone-boosting effects in humans.
