Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Macaenes are bioactive compounds found in the root of Lepidium meyenii, commonly known as maca. Maca has a long history of traditional use in the Andes of Peru, where it has been consumed as both a food and a traditional remedy. In folk medicine, maca root has been associated with enhancing fertility, stamina, libido, and overall vitality, including support for reproductive health in men. The traditional rationale for its use to support the testosterone body system stems from these observations, although the term “testosterone” itself is modern and was not specifically referenced in traditional use.

Scientific studies on maca and specifically macaenes have investigated their potential effects on sexual function, fertility, and hormonal balance. While some animal and limited human studies suggest that maca supplementation may improve sexual desire and semen quality, most research does not show a significant increase in serum testosterone levels in men. The mechanisms are not fully understood, and evidence is mixed or of low quality regarding direct testosterone support. Therefore, while there is a strong tradition of using maca (and by extension, macaenes) for reproductive health, robust scientific validation for direct testosterone support is lacking. The evidence rating is 2, reflecting traditional use with only limited and inconclusive scientific support.
