Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhaponticum carthamoides, also known as Leuzea or Maral root, has a long history of use in traditional Russian and Eastern European herbal medicine. It has been used primarily as an adaptogen, believed to enhance physical performance, endurance, and recovery. Traditional claims also include support for male vitality and sexual function, which are sometimes indirectly related to testosterone and androgenic activity. However, direct evidence from historical sources specifically linking Rhaponticum carthamoides to increased testosterone levels is limited. Most traditional use centers on its general tonic and restorative properties for athletes and those recovering from illness.

Scientific studies on Rhaponticum carthamoides are sparse, especially in relation to its effect on testosterone levels in humans. Some animal studies and in vitro experiments have suggested that components called ecdysteroids, particularly 20-hydroxyecdysone, may have anabolic effects, potentially influencing muscle mass and physical performance. However, evidence directly connecting these effects to increased testosterone production or modulation in humans is lacking. As such, while there is a traditional basis for its use in supporting male vitality and possibly the testosterone body system, the scientific evidence remains limited and inconclusive.
