Withanolides are a group of naturally occurring steroidal lactones found primarily in the plant Withania somnifera, commonly known as Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a tonic for vitality and male reproductive health. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to investigate its effects on testosterone and related body systems. Some clinical trials indicate that supplementation with Ashwagandha root extract, standardized for withanolide content, may result in modest increases in serum testosterone levels, particularly in men experiencing infertility or chronic stress. For example, a 2010 study published in Fertility and Sterility found that Ashwagandha root extract improved testosterone and other reproductive hormones in infertile men. Another 2015 randomized controlled trial in the American Journal of Men’s Health reported increased testosterone and muscle strength in young men undergoing resistance training who were supplemented with Ashwagandha extract.

However, while these findings are promising, the overall body of evidence remains limited in terms of sample size, study duration, and population diversity. The precise role of withanolides, as opposed to other Ashwagandha constituents, is not fully elucidated. Thus, there is preliminary scientific support for the use of withanolides to support testosterone levels, but the strength of evidence is still considered low to moderate.
