Evidence supporting the use of: Tribulus Terrestris
For the health condition: Testosterone (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Tribulus Terrestris has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic and aphrodisiac, often claimed to enhance male virility and support testosterone levels. The rationale for its use is primarily based on historical practices and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific evidence. Animal studies have sometimes suggested an increase in testosterone following Tribulus supplementation, likely due to its saponin content, particularly protodioscin. However, most well-controlled human studies have failed to demonstrate a significant effect on testosterone levels in healthy men or those with diagnosed low testosterone. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses consistently report limited and inconsistent findings, with some studies showing minimal or no benefit. While Tribulus Terrestris is widely marketed for male health and testosterone support, the scientific validation for its use in treating low testosterone is weak. Its continued use for this purpose is mainly rooted in traditional practices and not supported by high-quality clinical evidence.
