Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Yohimbe is a traditional herbal remedy derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, native to West Africa. It has historically been used as an aphrodisiac and to support male sexual health, including the treatment of erectile dysfunction and low libido. The use of yohimbe for supporting or treating low testosterone, however, is not well-supported by scientific evidence. Traditional use does include claims related to male vitality and sexual performance, which may be indirectly linked in some cultures to testosterone levels, but there is little direct evidence that yohimbe actually increases testosterone production. Modern scientific studies have primarily focused on yohimbine, the active alkaloid in yohimbe bark, and its effects on blood flow and erectile function rather than hormone regulation. Few clinical trials have directly investigated its impact on testosterone levels, and those that exist either show no significant effect or are methodologically weak. Therefore, while yohimbe is traditionally used for male sexual health, there is insufficient scientific validation to support its use specifically for low testosterone. Its primary mechanism appears to be as an alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist, which can improve blood flow rather than hormone levels. Caution is also warranted due to potential side effects, including anxiety, hypertension, and cardiovascular risks.
