Alpha-GPC (L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine) is a choline-containing supplement often marketed to support cognitive function and reduce "brain fog" (cloudy thinking). There is some scientific evidence suggesting that Alpha-GPC can influence cognitive processes, particularly in populations experiencing cognitive decline. Several randomized controlled trials have examined its effects in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, showing modest improvements in memory, attention, and other cognitive domains compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism is increased acetylcholine synthesis, a neurotransmitter critical for learning and memory.
However, evidence in healthy adults or those with subjective "cloudy thinking" is limited. Some small studies have suggested potential benefits for memory and mental clarity, but these are often short-term, involve small participant numbers, or focus on populations with mild cognitive impairment rather than the general population. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, with most robust benefits seen in clinical cognitive disorders rather than everyday brain fog. There are no large, well-powered studies specifically targeting "cloudy thinking" in healthy adults. Thus, while Alpha-GPC does have a plausible biological rationale and some supportive clinical data, its efficacy for general brain fog remains to be conclusively established.
