Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a caffeinated leaf native to the Amazon rainforest and has been traditionally consumed by indigenous peoples of Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. The leaves are brewed into a tea used for its stimulating properties, particularly to promote alertness, mental clarity, and wakefulness. Historical accounts and ethnobotanical records indicate that Amazonian communities have relied on guayusa as a morning drink before hunting or communal activities, suggesting its role in supporting clear and focused thinking. The effect is mainly attributed to its caffeine content, which is known to counteract cognitive fatigue and improve attention. However, direct scientific studies evaluating guayusa’s impact specifically on “cloudy thinking” or cognitive fog are limited. Most available scientific literature extrapolates from the general understanding of caffeine’s effects on cognition, alertness, and reaction time. While guayusa also contains other compounds such as theobromine and antioxidants that may contribute to overall brain health, robust clinical trials focused on cognitive enhancement or mental clarity in humans are lacking. Therefore, the traditional use of guayusa to support clear thinking is documented and plausible due to its caffeine content, but high-quality clinical evidence specific to this use is not yet established.
