Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has a long history of use for cardiovascular conditions, including the prevention and treatment of thrombosis. Over recent decades, modern research has provided scientific evidence supporting its pharmacological effects related to thrombosis. The main bioactive components of Danshen, such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids, have been shown in preclinical studies to possess antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and vasodilatory properties. These compounds inhibit platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, and improve microcirculation, which are relevant mechanisms in thrombosis prevention and management.
Clinical studies, primarily from China, have reported that Danshen extracts, alone or in combination with other herbs or conventional therapies, may reduce the incidence of thrombotic events and improve outcomes in patients with conditions like angina, myocardial infarction, and stroke. However, the methodological quality of many studies is variable, and large-scale, rigorous randomized controlled trials are relatively limited. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have generally found supportive but not definitive evidence for Danshen’s efficacy in preventing or treating thrombosis, often citing the need for more robust clinical evidence.
In summary, the use of Danshen for thrombosis is supported both by traditional use and by a moderate level of scientific evidence, particularly from in vitro, animal, and some human studies. While promising, further high-quality clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
