Rating (out of 5): 2

Diosmin is a flavonoid compound commonly derived from citrus fruits and is used therapeutically for various venous disorders. Its use for thrombosis, particularly venous thrombosis (such as deep vein thrombosis or DVT), is supported by some scientific evidence, though the quality and strength of this evidence are moderate. Diosmin is best known for its role in the management of chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoidal disease, where it improves venous tone, lymphatic drainage, and capillary resistance. These properties theoretically support its use in preventing or treating thrombosis by reducing venous stasis, which is a key risk factor for clot formation. Clinical studies and systematic reviews have investigated micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF), which contains diosmin, showing improvements in symptoms of chronic venous disease and reduction of edema. Some studies have suggested a possible benefit in reducing the risk of thrombosis in patients with chronic venous disorders, but these results are not robust or consistent enough to support its use as a primary or sole therapy for thrombosis. Major international guidelines do not recommend diosmin as a standalone or first-line treatment for established venous thrombosis; anticoagulation remains the standard of care. In summary, while there is scientific rationale and some clinical evidence for diosmin's supportive role in venous disorders associated with thrombosis risk, the evidence is moderate and insufficient for recommending it as a primary therapy for thrombosis.
