Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2
Lumbrokinase is an enzyme complex extracted from earthworms (typically Eisenia fetida) and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation. In recent years, it has gained attention for potential use in supporting or treating thrombosis due to its fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) activity. Preclinical studies and a limited number of small clinical trials have shown that lumbrokinase can enhance fibrinolysis by converting plasminogen to plasmin, which helps break down fibrin, the main protein component of blood clots. Some studies, primarily from China, have reported reductions in blood clot markers and improved blood flow in patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases when lumbrokinase was administered.
Despite these findings, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain limited. Most studies to date are small, lack rigorous controls, or are not published in widely accessible international journals. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have highlighted methodological weaknesses and the need for larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, while there is a mechanistic rationale and some early clinical support for lumbrokinase in thrombosis management, the evidence is not sufficiently robust to fully endorse its routine use in mainstream medicine.
