Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been studied extensively for their effects on cardiovascular health, including their potential role in the prevention and treatment of thrombosis. Several mechanisms have been proposed through which omega-3 fatty acids may reduce thrombosis risk: they inhibit platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, lower plasma triglyceride levels, and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical studies and meta-analyses suggest that omega-3 supplementation can modestly reduce markers of platelet activation and aggregation, which are key factors in thrombus (blood clot) formation. However, the direct impact on major thrombotic events (such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) is less clear. Large randomized controlled trials like GISSI-Prevenzione and REDUCE-IT have shown cardiovascular benefits, but these are often attributed to broader effects rather than a specific anti-thrombotic action. The American Heart Association acknowledges omega-3s for cardiovascular risk reduction, but recommendations for thrombosis prevention specifically remain cautious due to mixed evidence. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and moderate clinical evidence that omega-3 fatty acids may support thrombosis prevention through their effects on platelet function and inflammation, the evidence is not definitive or strong enough to recommend omega-3s as a primary therapy for thrombosis, hence a rating of 3.
