Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2
Troxerutin is a flavonoid derivative commonly used in some countries for the management of chronic venous insufficiency, edema, and related vascular conditions. Its use for thrombosis is supported by some scientific evidence, though the data is relatively limited and of moderate quality. Several animal studies and small clinical trials suggest that troxerutin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic properties. Mechanistically, it appears to inhibit platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, and protect vascular endothelium, which may theoretically reduce the risk of thrombosis.
For example, research published in Phytotherapy Research and other journals has demonstrated that troxerutin can decrease the formation of blood clots in animal models, likely due to its effects on platelet function and endothelial protection. A few small human studies involving patients with chronic venous disorders have also shown that troxerutin may improve symptoms and reduce markers associated with thrombosis risk, such as D-dimer levels. However, comprehensive randomized controlled trials specifically targeting patients with acute or chronic thrombosis are lacking.
Overall, while some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence support the use of troxerutin for thrombosis, the clinical evidence is not strong, and its use is not widely endorsed in Western medical guidelines for the prevention or treatment of thrombosis. More robust clinical trials are required to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
